Bringing chemistry in the hands of researchers: the SMART virtual laboratory on the cover of the Journal of Computational Chemistry.

Based on state‐of‐the‐art virtual‐reality technology and quantum chemical techniques, a team of researchers from the SMART Lab developed a virtual laboratory for the immersive analysis of chemical bonding, allowing chemists to perceive at a human scale how electrons rearrange upon formation of a chemical bond. Entering the CAVE theater installed at SNS, scientists are cast into the world of atoms and molecules where they can perform, in an interactive and cooperative way, numerical analysis on the visualized data as if in a laboratory experiment. The cover image portrays a researcher vis‐à‐vis with a molecular system in the virtual laboratory, analyzing the electron‐charge flows upon binding of CO to a heme group.

The 2° Italian Workshop on Astrochemistry will be held in Follonica on June 13-16.

The main goal is to bring together astrophysicists and chemists working on observations, theoretical models, and laboratory experiments to present their recent advances, to discuss about the open questions, and to plan further future collaborations.

The workshop features invited talks by national and international leading experts on the topics:

  • Observations of interstellar complex molecules
  • Kinetics and molecular spectroscopy
  • Computational and Laboratory Reactivity
  • Prebiotic Chemistry
